Trichloroethylene in drinking water filter health
Trichloroethylene (Trichloroethene) is a clear, volatile liquid. Liquid trichloroethylene evaporates quickly into the air. It is nonflammable and has a sweet odor. The two major uses of trichloroethylene are as a solvent to remove grease from metal parts and as a chemical that is used to make other chemicals, especially the refrigerant, HFC-134a.

Trichloroethylene has also been used as an extraction solvent for greases, oils, fats, waxes, and tars; by the textile processing industry to scour cotton, wool, and other fabrics; in dry cleaning operations; and as a component of adhesives, lubricants, paints, varnishes, paint strippers, pesticides, and cold metal cleaners.

How can trichloroethylene affect my health?
Trichloroethylene is a health hazard and now in 2023 has been linked to Parkinson's Disease by a study published in the Journal of Parkinson's Disease by Dr. Dorsey, Professor of Neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
The elderly and very young are particularly susceptible to the health effects of trichloroethylene. Drinking water that has high levels of trichloroethylene over long periods of time can cause health effects such as:
• Central nervous system impairment
• Harm to the kidney, liver and male reproductive system
• Increased risk of autoimmune disease
• Linked in a 2023 peer reviewed study to Parkinson's Disease
• Increased risk of cancer

How did trichloroethylene get into my water?
The major source of trichloroethylene in drinking water is discharge from metal degreasing sites and other factories. Wastewater from metal finishing, paint and ink formulation, electrical components, and rubber processing industries may also contain trichloroethylene.
